Build a budget
Add groups and line items, assign a cost code per line, import from a template, and save your changes.
A budget is built from groups (sections of related work) and line items inside them. This guide covers adding both, assigning cost codes, and saving — the budget uses an explicit save, so your edits are buffered until you commit them.
Open the budget
- From the sidebar, open Projects and click into a project.
- Click the Budget tab.
Add a group
Groups organize the sheet — "Sitework", "Framing", "Finishes", and so on.
- At the bottom-left of the sheet, click Add Group.
- Type the group's name and press Enter.
A new group lands after whichever group you have selected (or at the end of the sheet).
Add a line item
- Select the group you want the line in (or click into a cell in it).
- Click Add Line Item at the bottom-left of the sheet.
- Fill in the row, moving across with Tab or the arrow keys:
- Name — what the item is. As you type, matching items from your catalog are suggested; pick one to pull in its unit, cost, and margin.
- Quantity and Unit (Each, Linear Feet, Square Feet, and so on).
- Unit Cost — your cost per unit, before markup.
- Margin % — leave blank to use the budget's default.
Extended Cost, Unit Price, Extended Price, and Profit fill in automatically as you type.
Assign a cost code to the line
Cost codes are how the budget rolls up for reporting and QuickBooks.
- In the line's Cost Code cell, click + Cost code.
- Search by number or name and pick a code. No match? Choose Uncategorized to file it for now.
The line's Cost Type (labor, material, subcontractor, and so on) is inherited from the cost code — you don't set it on the line.
Reorder, move, and delete
- Drag a row by its row-number cell to reorder it, or drag it into another group.
- Drag a group's header to reorder whole groups.
- Select one or more rows (click the row numbers), then use the Delete control in the top toolbar.
Note
Start from a template
If you've saved a budget as a reusable template, you can drop it in:
- In the toolbar, click Import from template.
- Search and select the template to add its groups and items.
To save the current budget as a template for next time, click Save as template.
Save your work
The budget does not auto-save. When you have unsaved changes, the orange-tinted cells and the active Save button in the toolbar show it.
- Click Save to commit your changes.
- Made a mistake? Use Undo and Redo in the toolbar.
